This is fascinating footage of an offshore fishing trip featuring baseball great Ted Williams in Cabo Blanco, Peru way back in December 1954.  Featured on Inside Sportfishings’  Black Marlin Boulevard DVD and promoted by Fishbuzz TV, the hokey Disney-let’s-go-to-the-drive-in music is quite the contrast to today’s fishing shows.

Williams’s black marlin weighed in at 1,235 pounds, making it the “8th largest gamefish landed with a rod and reel” (55 years ago).  Just the tail was four feet from tip to tip!  Overall length was 14′ and the girth measured a massive 6’10″!

The original film is courtesy of the International Game Fish Association (IGFA).

“Doug Olander, Editor in Chief, of Sport Fishing Magazine, writes, “The waters off a nondescript bluff on the northern Peru coast produced the most remarkable action the world has ever seen for colossal black marlin, abundant swordfish, striped marlin and huge bigeye tuna. No other spot could rival it then: no other spot rivals it now. And it seems increasingly possible that no place ever will.”
