No Country For Cold Men

Bow Buck '09 009

From the northern outpost of Doubletough country, Bubba Enget forwards this report of his buddy Stewart Kline and his (nearly) New Year’s buck. Stewart was featured in an earlier post, “Buck In Cock Country”.  In that post he bagged a fine muley and now he’s put down a monster whitetail:

-9 is when the men are out and the rest stay home, been watching this buck for 2 weeks and waiting for the wind to be right. Finally got a south wind and the hunt was on. The deer moved late. I watched as this and four other bucks skirted me at 50 yards. I had about three minutes of light left and he walked over to where I was, I drew and held as he was facing me for about two minutes. He took one step and gave me a little window where I drove my spitfire through one shoulder, two ribs, and both lungs. Game over.

Buck In Cock Country

Deer Hunting11-13-09 (17)

*For the readers from Carolina, “cock” refers to pheasant and there’s no better place for pheasant than the Dakotas. But we’re not talking cock today, just bucks…..

Doubletough contributor Bubba Enget passed this along of his friend Stewart from Williston, North Dakota:

I put a lot of miles on my boots and really didn’t see to many nice deer this year.  This was one of the nicest I could find.

We’ll hang on to the exact location, just in case Stewart plans on hitting the same spot next year.  Check out another photo after the jump….

Doubletough contributor Bubba Enget of Devils Lake, North Dakota passed along these trailcam photos taken this summer.  After seeing deer activity in a field behind his house, he set  up the camera to see if anything interesting was walking.  Looks like a good season ahead!

Springtime in Devils Lake

May 31st, 2009

bubbasfriend

Got the spring fishing report from Bubba up in Devils Lake, North Dakota and it sounds great.  It took them some time to find the right fishing hole and the Doubletougher was gracious enough to let his friend do the navigating as they started out.  “Pitched cranks in the shallows, went to Ford Bay, Doc Howard, everywhere….no fish”, he recounts.  So Bubba, who readily claims not to be the Devils Lake expert his friend is but knows a thing or two about tossing lines around the Dakotas, suggested they “go pitch jigs at Mauvee Coolee brig.”

Reluctantly he said ok.  So I started fishing a verticle jig and caught a nice 18″ ‘eye.  We did that for a while and no more hits so Aaron said we should throw out a couple of slip bobbers and before you know it, the FISH ARE ON!!!

So the lake pro and Bubba are dancing around the boat grabbing nets and clearing space and as the fish rose to the surface, “I began to shake.”  Bubba reported the fish weighed in at just shy of eleven pounds and measured 30 inches.  Hoping to do their part for the Devils Lake fishery, they let the walleye back in the water as she was full of eggs.  Bubba’s final words on the adventure, “North Dakota, greatest state in the upper 50!”

Yes Bubba, on that day I would have to agree.

snowgeese

Those are snow geese up in North Dakota.  A freakin’ bunch of ‘em.  Thanks to Doubletougher Bubba Enget of Devils Lake for sending these in, I really need to get up there one day.  In the meantime, check in with Cory over at GotHunts.com to book your next waterfowl hunt.

Doubletougher Bubba Enget forwarded these photos of Vent Wallace and friends with a fantastic bull he harvested in North Dakota back in ‘07.  It’s only April and already we’re thinking about the upcoming season!  Hey, if I can get up there before the cold and snow rolls in, book it!

“This Thing Is A Damn Monster!”

During a hunting trip to North Dakota last fall I met quite a few characters, many of whom I recognized from emails shared among this group of friends.  One of these was Terry Doll of Mandan, ND.  A childhood friend of Doubletough contributor Bubba Enget, Terry at one point offered to be my “translator”, since the NoDaks were having trouble understanding my Southern drawl, but that’s another story.

Bubba recently passed along a press release from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation announcing their 2009 Great Elk Tour, featuring trophy mounts at stops across the country.  Terry knocked down a brute in 2007 and his 397 1/8 bull will be representing North Dakota on the tour.  Knowing there had to be a great story behind the hunt, he did not disappoint.
