No Overnight Camping

February 27th, 2010

The story goes that the Arizona Game & Fish Department set up these water tanks in the White Tank Mountain Recreation Park, about twenty miles west of Phoenix. Mountain lions had been seen in the area and the idea was to draw them in to “monitor their activity” and perhaps attempt to get an idea of how many were there.

From the resulting webcam photos, the notices to watch out for mountain lions are no joke.

Thanks to Tyke for sending these in!

Mountain Lion Vs. Ram: No Winner

June 9th, 2009

cleartheroad

An incredible scene for two hikers in Glacier National Park in Montana.  The road was closed to vehicular traffic (it was winter after all) and the hikers, Daniel Wilder and a friend according to the email, found this mountain lion and ram.  What took place is obvious:  the cougar had the ram in its jaw and the struggle between the two led to the pair falling from the cliff above the road.

After the jump are additional [GRAPHIC] photos that paints it clearly.  Amazing.

Honey What Have You Been Feeding The Cat

May 9th, 2009

Not all wildlife showing up in the backyard are Bambi and Thumper, or even the neighborhood kids sneaking into the pool.  Here in my neck of the woods about the scariest thing sneaking through an open door are these freakish jumping spiders or the bassett hound chasing the chihuahua.

These shots of a mountain lion looking through the door are downright bone chilling.  Seeing the videos of a big cat wandering through Chicago, taking down a deer on a stealthcam and reading about another cat ambushing a mountain biker in California have a voyeuristic sense about them but this brings it home.  What drew him in?  Why didn’t he spook when the photographer appeared?  How much is a new door and where is my gun?

More photos after the jump.

A Surprise In The Field

November 12th, 2008

Yesterday I was north of Pierre, South Dakota chasing pheasants and it reminded me of this email from 2006. The story goes that a pheasant hunter named Kent Ferguson of Mohall, North Dakota was in the field when his dog jumped a mountain lion.  The cat went after the dog and Kent dispatched it with three rounds from his shotgun.  The dog escaped with a few stitiches and the cat was estimated at 100 pounds. Nice Kitty

September 14th, 2008

This submission came with a note saying the two men were “looking for animal horns near Vernon, Utah”.  What we’ve got here are two Doubletough guys coming across a mountain lion during lunch, but rather than defend its kill, it welcomes them like a long-lost pet!  Remarkably, the cat appears to let one of them touch it on the muzzle and even sniffs their rifle. One Big Kitty

August 15th, 2008

Photos of this mountain lion made the round online during the spring of ‘07.  Supposedly it was shot up north near Walkerton, Ontario, targeted after it had killed some cattle.  The grow ‘em big (the lion, not the cattle) in Canada as the ranchers said this one had friends. Read more…
