I’m a self-professed bag nut. Computer bags, luggage, briefcases, hunting packs, day packs, camera bags….I can’t get enough. That came to an abrupt end with the Badlands Ultra Day pack which I finally got my hands on in 2008. I say “finally” because I had hard time justifying paying the big bucks for another hunting pack that would likely be at the bottom of the closet when it would surely disappoint. I can happily say that is not the case and the Ultra Day has become my go-to piece of gear when I load up the truck for a weekend in the deer stand.

Leave it to a New Yawker to go elk hunting in Montana and come back with a llama! This goof even sent his elk tag with the photos (details blurred, contact me if you want the original), check out all the photos after the jump.
Sad thing is there’s likely some outfitter missing one of his pack animals. I can just imagine this hunter serving the backstraps to his family…. Read more…

Don’t know anything about this one but the email said “540 class”. He’s a hoss alright, but I’m a bit skeptical on it going 540.
According to Boone and Crockett, the largest non-typical elk came in at 478 5/8 (2008, Denny Austad, Piute County, Utah). For that matter, the largest typical elk was 442 5/8 (1968, Alonzo Winters, White Mountains, Arizona).
If you know anything about this bruiser and the hunter, let us know in the Comments. Check out another photo after the jump. Read more…

Robert Dunn knew what he was looking for and was willing to wait on just the right bull elk, even when faced with opportunities any hunter would be happy to simply see, much less have a shot on. Jim Mullins of Mullins Outfitters announced this week that Dunn, winner of their 2008-2009 Arizona Big Game Super Raffle bagged this 400-class monster after two weeks of rigourous scouting with the Mullins staff.
“In the process of relocating certain bulls during the hunt, Robert had the opportunity to pass up several 370-395 class buls and held firm in his decision to hold out”, said Mullins in an email to friends of Mullins Outfitters. Read more…

The story that accompanied this photo was that it was the largest bull ever taken, with any weapon, and was shot in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness of Idaho. It circulated the internet in 2006 and not long after it was revealed that it was taken on private property, ie. “ranch raised”. Regardless, it’s still a fine trophy and there’s no reason to believe the stats were not accurate: green score of 575″ (expected net of 530″) and an outside spread of 79″.
