Lordy, Lordy….
….I just turned 40. That’s me on the left with the snazzy red Vuarnet shades, sometime around 1986 I think. The other two studs are my brothers, Hal and Reid.

Talk about a good day on the water! Beach Billy was aboard the Pole Position on Friday as they headed offshore from Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina and it wasn’t long before the lines started singing! Among this motley bunch was Billy’s good buddy, John Boy, of the Charlotte-based and nationally syndicated radio morning show, “John Boy & Billy Big Show“. There’s nothing like fresh fried mahi on a Friday night.
With a weeklong stretch of 80-degree weather, folks around these parts are talking bluewater fishing and that means billfish in the Gulf Stream. The month of May serves as a warmup for the summer fishing tournaments with the biggest of them all kicking off in June right up the road in Morehead City, North Carolina: The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament. These shots were scanned and sent to us from Beach Billy and feature one of the toughest gamefishes around: tarpon. This one was caught off Bald Head Island, North Carolina by John Guggenheimer. Tarpon are spectacular to watch; they jump when hooked and put up a fight worthy of bigger fish found further offshore. They’re big fish too – I recall hold the scale of one and it was bigger than a fifty-cent piece.

We’ve mentioned before that if you’re not outdoors, you don’t know what you may miss and these shots of deer swimming in eastern North Carolina are a great example. Thanks to Beach Billy for forwarding these photos taken by David Smith. Smith was near their hunting camp while heading out to wet a line. The story doesn’t end there, check out the school of redfish busting the water after the jump.

The fishing off Wrightsville Beach doesn’t wait until summer to heat up! During the April blue marlin tournament the fish were biting and the scales were tipping: the tournament fleet boated or tagged 8 of 16 hookups with Pole Position landing one estimated to be over 600 pounds. Buck Wild was not in the tournament and landed one also over 600 and this photo shows the boys aboard Double Shot bringing a nice one to the boat. Thanks to Beach Billy for this report!
