Video taken near Estes, Colorado on a Forest Service access road. Estes is near Rocky Mountain National Park, home to one of the largest elk herds in the country.
Thanks to Tyke Bennett and Aaron Enget for sending this in!
What is it with trees falling on elk? I step on a twig and they take off quicker’n Usain Bolt, but apparently they’re no match for a scragglin’ ol’ dead pine tree.
If you’ve ever driven the blue highways of northeastern Arizona then you know what the elk think of roads. They don’t. This incident reminded me of a late night drive from Colorado Springs to Phoenix with a rodeo buddy (same guy who sent me these photos come to think of it). We were told to watch our speed through these areas and doggone if we didn’t come around the corner to a whole mess of elk in the road. It sure woke us up that night.
Unfortunately the driver of the Nissan Murano wasn’t so lucky. Well, his car wasn’t lucky, he walked away with scratches, bruises and likely some soiled shorts. He took out seven elk according to the Forest Service worker who called a friend of the driver. ”He said that he has never, ever, seen anyone kill seven elk with one vehicle and walk away from it,” said the worker.
These photos were forwarded by Doubletougher Aaron Enget of Colorado, who shot them over the weekend. He found this bull and cows about eight miles from his mother’s house, along County Road 5 northeast of Divide, CO. Fortunately for them, she doesn’t hunt.
If you’ve ever been to Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain National Park, or any publicly-accessible area where the “locals” have no fear of man, then I’m sure you seen the folks attempting for a Darwin Award by trying to get close to an animal. If this big boy isn’t afraid of a half-ton Dodge, then you can bet he’s not afraid of an overweight, Cheetos’ eatin’ couch potato.
Heckuva find by Allen over at the Addicted to Hunting blog. A lot of the folks commenting are suggesting it’s Photoshop trick but I’m thinking not. Here’s to hoping someone happened upon it in time to grab the backstraps…..
Doubletougher Bubba Enget forwarded these photos of Vent Wallace and friends with a fantastic bull he harvested in North Dakota back in ‘07. It’s only April and already we’re thinking about the upcoming season! Hey, if I can get up there before the cold and snow rolls in, book it!
