When you’re from Texas, you have big expectations. Those expectations stick with you, even when you venture across the state line. A man’s gotta have standards, after all.
Wesley O’Brien of Lexington, Texas drove 750 miles to Richardson County, Nebraska (as far southeast in the state as one can be) to hunt private property with a buddy who knew the landowner. The sun had not set on the first day of gun season in Nebraska, November 14, before this buck was on the ground. Heck, the truck had not even cooled down when the buck stepped out at 100 yards.
O’Brien’s buck green-scored 281, besting the standing Nebraska record of 279 7/8. That deer, known as “Old Mossy Horns” was taken with a bow 47 years earlier. The Nebraska record for a non-typical firearm deer is 242 5/8 way back in ‘61. The drying period has past though there’s no word yet on the official score of the O’Brien buck quite yet. If you’ve heard anything, please let us know in the comments!
The Lincoln Journal Star reported that due to his economic situation, O’Brien has hired an agent to consider offers for the antlers once they’re mounted.
Until then, check out more photos of the O’Brien Buck after the jump.
Strange goings’ on in the foothills of North Carolina. So strange in fact, a local paper has dedicated a page to mapping sightings of a piebald deer along with a contest to name the creature for a grand prize of ten dollars.
Cleveland County, home of Bridges Barbeque in Shelby, is about an hour west of Charlotte. According to the map, this deer has covered quite a bit of territory, ranging as far as Lake Wylie (southwest of Charlotte) to South Mountains State Park (south of Morganton). The majority of the sightings are in the Shelby-Cherryville-Gastonia triangle.
This may not mean much to you but it sure does to my Mother, who sent me the map. Click here to check it out, it really is kinda neat.
Looking for something to do this weekend? Grab your coat and head to the South Carolina Lowcountry for the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition! You and over 40,000 others can enjoy one of the most anticipated shows of the year, featuring 500+ artists and exhibitors.
I’ll be there as an exhibitor, showing off Anchorpoint and Trophy Score in the Sporting Village. No, these aren’t dog names, even though the DockDocks competition and retriever demonstrations will be going on there as well. Trophy Score is the only big game scoring app for the iPhone approved by Boone and Crockett and SCI, while Anchorpoint hosts a full-featured hunt club manager along with the database of trophies generated by Trophy Score. Stop by and say hello inside the tent located at Brittlebank Park along the Ashley River.
The Expo is open to the public 9 am – 6pm Friday & Saturday and 9am – 5pm Sunday. The event calendar is chockful of great stuff, from a Birds of Prey Flight Demo, presentations by Jack Hanna, Cast Net and Fly Fishing demonstrations……whew, there really is something for everyone.
Tickets are $20 Friday & Saturday and $10 on Sunday with kids under 10 free all weekend.
My wife was raised in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina but will not swim in the ocean. Sure, I’ve managed to coax her in but the slightest touch of seaweed, undulation of the bottom or, god forbid, she steps on a crab, and she is outta there. To much out there with teeth and she can’t see any of it coming and that’s that.
You can imagine the conversation when I showed her this story:
Bill Hedden, 59, was snorkeling in a South Carolina lake on Sunday when the 12-foot-long gator attacked, according to witnesses.
I don’t typically read those really long emails that come through my mailbox but this one had just the right mix of explosions, Dukes of Hazzard references and similarities to my own childhood that I thought it would be entertaining. Enjoy your Super Sunday!

(Original author) This was sent to me in an email from an old shootin buddy who asked I attribute it anonymously. It’s one of the funniest things I’ve read in a long time. Hope you guys get a charge out of it too. lol
Around age 10 my dad got me a really cool present … one of those little badass compound bow beginner kits. Of course, the first month I went around our place sticking arrows in anything that could get stuck by an arrow. Did you know that a 1955 40 horse Farmall tractor will take 6 rounds before it goes down? Tough sumbich. Read more…

Thanks to Tyke Bennett and Aaron Enget for sending this in!
Check out the crew of JagerPro as they do some population control on an outlaw band of Georgia hogs. Using thermal imaging atop a DPMS Panther Arms .308 rifle, they drop the hammer on 22 hogs in a single night.
