Not In the Brochure

Chip March 30, 2009 Campfire Stories, Elk

lead

Elk hunting in the Rockies is no Sunday drive and definitely lives up to the saying, the work begins when you down your animal.  These undated photos (pre-’06) tell a story that goes well beyond that concept.

The photos give a great idea of the situation:  hunter shoots trophy bull elk, elk falls off cliff, antlers catch on rocks.  None provide an accurate idea of how far down the animal fell but that no attempt to haul it up with horses leads one to believe it just was not feasible.  With the animal in such a precarious situation, it also looks like an attempt at the backstraps was not a safe idea.  Removing the antlers would be a matter of sawing to the point the weight of the body causes it to break free.

With the help of a rock climber that’s exactly how it appears to have played out.  Check out the photos after the jump and if you know the story behind them, let us know in the comments.
