It’s no secret the country’s heartland is home to Boone & Crockett bruisers and the latest entry to the story is keeping that reputation alive and well. The hunter is Chuck Hamstra and the buck was taken back in November outside Albany, Illinois with a bow shortly before sunset.
He found a shed from this critter in April 2007 and they had seen it while coyote chasin’ in January. His son Dave even missed the monster during gun season.
Chuck figured he could squeeze in some hunting time after combining corn all day and was a bit discouraged when he spooked some does on his way to the stand. Fortunately it was a short wait – just ten minutes into his sit, out stepped the buck at ten yards. Chuck let loose a 125-grain Thunderhead.
The bowhunter called his wife to let her know he got a “decent” buck and she responded with “Whatever, it’s not gonna hang in the house!”
Chuck’s double-lung shot made quick work of the deer and he phoned his son to ask for help tracking him. Apparently ol’ Chuck has a reputation for poor shooting as the son prepared for a long night of looking for blood. It wasn’t long before he came on the scene that they found a good trail and “he shines the light on the huge buck and the poop hit the fan!”
An avid but unlucky elk hunter, Chuck has been saving that spot above the fireplace for a big bull but when his wife finally laid eyes on this buck, she quickly realized this was no mere “decent” buck. Not only would it go in the house, she declared it was going in that sacred spot reserved for the elk.
Congratulations Chuck on a fantastic hunt, you’re welcome to Doubletough country any time.
