With a weeklong stretch of 80-degree weather, folks around these parts are talking bluewater fishing and that means billfish in the Gulf Stream.  The month of May serves as a warmup for the summer fishing tournaments with the biggest of them all kicking off in June right up the road in Morehead City, North Carolina:  The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament.

This is a high dollar event with a $2,500 entry fee.  There are several ways to win back your entry fee and more, from having the first catch & release of the day ($2,000, awarded every day of the tournament), 51st release ($5,100), largest blue marlin ($25,000), 2nd largest ($10,000) and 3rd largest ($6,000).  Catch more than one in a single day and you can take home $7,780.  Catch the most in the week and you can afford a new bass boat, $76,500!

But that’s just the “official” prize levels.  The real excitement comes with the Calcutta with a total pot that approaches $1 million.

This year’s tournament is June 6-13 and if you can’t make it, follow all the action online. You’ve got one month, don’t say we didn’t warn ya.
