Thank you to Dayne Shuda of Hunting Business Marketing for naming this post one of the Top 50 Hunting Blog Posts of 2009!

Spring can be a slow time for hunters:  turkey season is winding down, tag applications are due and guns & bows are being put aside for fishing rods.  They’re shaking off winter’s cabin fever and taking the family camping.  Everyone’s relaxed, ready for summer.  Then someone suggests a hog hunt.

That’s pretty much how it went down for Cory Glauner of Outdoors International.  “Every year we go camping in Utah with my wife’s family.  We have a grand ol’ redneck good time.  Shoot lots of guns, have paintball wars and this year I upped the ante with a boar hunt,” he said, explaining how it was that he came face to face with this purebred Russian boar with nothing but a stick & string between them.

If you have never had the rush of taking on a hog / boar, don’t be fooled – these are quick, elusive and potentially dangerous animals.  They’re found in some of the most difficult places to reach and can disappear in the brush tougher than barbed wire.  Once a shot presents itself, there’s the shield to deal with, making broadside shots critical.  The shield can be an inch thick and runs behind the head to cover the neck and shoulders.  Glauner agrees: “I snuck in and shot him at 26 yards with my bow.  I was amazed by the shield in their hide.  My arrow went through the ribs on both sides, and my broadhead was stuck in the opposite shield.  I get way better penetration than that on an elk.  Impressive.”

He estimated the tusks to be nearly five inches in length.  To get a good idea of how big that is, check out the european mount he made of the skull:

I’ve never done a hog hunt, a buddy of mine said it was the best meat he’s ever killed! That’s motivation right there, I love meat! Where’d you go?

  2. doubletough says:

Cory was somewhere in Utah. I went on a hunt a few years ago in California and the meat was fantastic. Had it processed locally and shipped to my home in North Carolina – that was one hefty shipping bill!

Hey, thanks for the post, and Allen I am hoping you’re right about the meat. It is still being processed. If it’s not good… well, that’s a lot of meat.

What is the name of the outfitter that you hunted with? I now live in utah and am looking for a good pig hunt. All I have been able to find is pigs from the sale barn.

An update on the meat… I was hoping it would be edible, but it is incredible. Super good. I’m surprised.

Gary, I missed your question earlier about broadheads. I use Trophy Takers Shuttle T-Locks. Love them.
