Getting Lucky In Arkansas

Chip November 14, 2008 Deer

No, this isn’t a post about Bill Clinton! Yesterday through Sunday I’m in White Earth, North Dakota for the Allie Enget Memorial Deer Hunt.  Allie is Aaron Enget’s father, who passed away a year ago.  The Doubletough crew were here in ’06 for a deer hunt and it was a completely different experience from how we do it down South.  Truly a community and family affair, most of the Enget Clan were on hand as we glassed coolies and teamed up to harvest several nice does.  Jody’s brother, Chris “Bubba” Enget downed a very nice mule buck and I managed a small 8-point whitetail with what I’m not ashamed to say was a damn impressive shot.  More on that in another post.  We all decided it would be a good thing to gather again in Allie Enget’s hometown to share memories of him and create new ones around the Doubletough campfire.

Barry Thorpe was Allie’s good friend and that’s not his deer in the photo;  he lives in Arkansas and was attending his nephew’s football game when a guy pulled up with the buck in the back of his truck.  He had just shot it before coming to see his own son play.  ”They were waiting to get an official from Boone & Crockett to come and score it.  Atypical, 16 points, and over 30 inches outside spread.  Got it with a muzzleloader,” said Thorpe.

That’s a great buck – and that’s why I love rural America. You won’t see someone showing up to their kid’s football game with a buck in the bed of their truck in LA or NY. I can remember a buddy of mine showing up to school one morning with a deer in the bed of his truck – he’d shot it before school, didn’t have time to take care of it before class, so brought it with him. He had a second period release when he took it home and skinned it.
