Doubletough Roper Lives To Hitchhike Again

Chip March 25, 2010 Asides

This isn’t hunting related but being that it happened to a friend of mine who darn sure fits the Doubletough mold, thought it worth sharing.

If you are not familiar with rodeo or roping, when a cowboy successfully ropes a calf they must dally their rope on the saddlehorn, ie. wrap it a couple times to create an anchor. At this point they turn their horse to draw the line taut.  At some point during this process my friend caught his thumb in the dally – he wrapped the rope around the saddlehorn AND his thumb – and when the line went tight, off came the thumb.

The images appear after the jump and again, **they are graphic**.

Prior to reattaching the thumb, a leech is used to remove dead skin.

The thumb is successfully reattached. I asked about the incision along the forearm, “when a rope cuts off your thumb, it pulls. So they have to do that for the tendons and nerves.” If it was anything like my own achilles rupture, what he’s saying is the tendons sucked back up into his arm so they had to be pulled down in order to be reattached.

The incident happened in December and after a few months, the thumb looks good!

Thanks to DD and Aaron for sharing and a continued successful recovery to Tyke!

Hi there, my dad just actually had the same thing happen to him just this past week, tore his thumb off in his dally. Just wondering how Tyke’s thumb is now and if you happen to have any recent photos and how his dexterity is with the thumb? He could use a little piece of mind on the positives that can come out of this.

    Thanks

I don’t have any recent photos but from what I understand he’s doing just fine. Sorry to hear it happened to your dad.
