Lady Walks Dog, Discovers Potential Record Buck

March 3rd, 2010

Not every trophy animal dies honorably; starvation, disease, predators, hit by a car, any number of things can happen between coming of age and appearing through your scope or bow sights. That seems to be the story here.

A lady walking her dog happened across the buck in a field back in early February. There is no apparent cause of death such as a bullet wound or contusions from being struck by a vehicle.  The son-in-law of a neighbor green-scored the animal at 247 which potentially makes a new state record for Michigan. Boone and Crockett recognizes such trophy finds as a “pickup” and are eligible for official record status.

The son-in-law has the antlers while waiting for the 60-day drying period.  In the meantime, he has his fingers crossed for an offer from Cabela’s!

Why My Wife Only Swims In Clear Water

February 9th, 2010

My wife was raised in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina but will not swim in the ocean.  Sure, I’ve managed to coax her in but the slightest touch of seaweed, undulation of the bottom or, god forbid, she steps on a crab, and she is outta there.  To much out there with teeth and she can’t see any of it coming and that’s that.

You can imagine the conversation when I showed her this story:

Bill Hedden, 59, was snorkeling in a South Carolina lake on Sunday when the 12-foot-long gator attacked, according to witnesses.

Archery And The Nature Of Boys

February 7th, 2010

I don’t typically read those really long emails that come through my mailbox but this one had just the right mix of explosions, Dukes of Hazzard references and similarities to my own childhood that I thought it would be entertaining.  Enjoy your Super Sunday!

Thanks to Doubletough member Aaron Enget.

(Original author) This was sent to me in an email from an old shootin buddy who asked I attribute it anonymously. It’s one of the funniest things I’ve read in a long time. Hope you guys get a charge out of it too. lol

Around age 10 my dad got me a really cool present … one of those little badass compound bow beginner kits. Of course, the first month I went around our place sticking arrows in anything that could get stuck by an arrow. Did you know that a 1955 40 horse Farmall tractor will take 6 rounds before it goes down? Tough sumbich.

Big Louie

December 21st, 2009

A sad end to a giant of a buck.  From the author:

The news is out. After keeping this brute a perfect secret all throughout the season “Big Louie” was found dead by pheasant hunters on my friends neighboring property. The 250″ buck was discovered by my friend Darin and his neighbor Mark. Here’s the story.

Early season I received a phone call from Darin, my good buddy. His voice sounded as if he had just shot a buck so i asked him what he got… He told me that nothing was dead but to get to his place as soon as I could so he could show me something. I drove over and looked at his computer and saw the biggest buck i had ever seen on a trail camera.

We sat there and talked about how he was going to hunt him, how to stay calm, how to go about the whole process of getting this buck, and how we couldn’t even speak of this Monarch. From then on

Darin told me he was in bowhunting mode and would settle for nothing less of the buck that had been named “Big Louie” by Mark.

All season I heard the stories from them both and saw that no matter what they tried, it was always outsmarting them. He wouldn’t be that big if he couldn’t outsmart them…Darin didn’t use a firearm all season. He told me that he was not going to go out and hunt during the firearms season and had to just sit around and pray that “Big Louie” would make it through. They would see him plenty during the bow season, but never in range.

Later in the season, just about a week or so ago the buck was found dead by pheasant hunters on John Grosboll’s property in Petersburg . The property was right next to Darin’s lease… Either way, it was a tragic way to see this monster go down. They ruled the death as natural causes.

Snakes In Cock Country

December 10th, 2009

snakes4

Following up on Friday’s post, this story comes out of South Dakota…..

During a pheasant hunt near Highmore, these hunters ran into trouble when one of the dogs came across a few rattlesnakes, getting bit in the process.  Perhaps more appropritely, the snakes ran into trouble.

Following the cock hunt, the gang regrouped and set off to bag some snakes that threatened the remainder of the season.  The result:  86 fewer rattlesnakes!

Wile E. Coyote Bites The Dust

August 16th, 2009

If you’ve ever seen Pikes Peak Raceway south of Colorado Springs, you would understand how this wayward coyote found his way onto the track.  Located between the Springs and Pueblo, it’s pretty much in the middle of nowhere and deer sightings are frequent along the nearby interstate. Check out the story after the jump from NASCAR driver Brand Coleman.
