Need A Blog Name? There’s A Hat For That

March 6th, 2010

Here at Doubletough we’re always on the lookout for ways to help others in the hunting industry and last month, Ameristep sought names for their new blog.  Ameristep is well-known in the outdoor space, offering several lines of blinds, tree stands, shelters, furniture and related gear for atv’s and hunting accessories.

Boiling all this down to one name was tough so I ultimately submitted these names via Twitter:

  • StepSpeak
  • Undercover
  • Under Cover
  • Out of the Blind
  • Beyond the Blind
  • Out in the Open

Well doggone it if they didn’t choose “Beyond the Blind” and made me the proud new owner of a sweet Ameristep camo hat!  Good timing, I was needing one.

Check out Beyond the Blind, it’s up and running.

Trophy Score Featured On Local News

March 1st, 2010

If you haven’t checked out Trophy Score yet and you own an iPhone, do yourself a favor and grab a copy. For just $2.99 it’ll be the best investment for your hunting adventures since the Ultra Day pack.

After an article appeared in the Wilmington Business Journal, local news WECT called about featuring it on their evening news. I was already on the road to the Southeastern Wildlife Expo in Charleston, South Carolina so if they could wait until the following week, I’ll let them have the scoop on Trophy Score Fishing. Being a beach town with a big fishing industry, it was a no-brainer.

As for the results, some quotes got chopped but all in all, it turned out well. “My best is pretty darn good” was preceded but “I’ll never get a world record but….”, to put it into context. A transcript of the interview can be read here.

Trophy Score was developed by the owner of this blog. Click here to learn more! Look for Trophy Score and Anchorpoint at the Dixie Deer Classic, March 5-7, in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Southeastern Wildlife Expo, February 12-14 2010

February 12th, 2010

Looking for something to do this weekend? Grab your coat and head to the South Carolina Lowcountry for the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition! You and over 40,000 others can enjoy one of the most anticipated shows of the year, featuring 500+ artists and exhibitors.

I’ll be there as an exhibitor, showing off Anchorpoint and Trophy Score in the Sporting Village.  No, these aren’t dog names, even though the DockDocks competition and retriever demonstrations will be going on there as well.  Trophy Score is the only big game scoring app for the iPhone approved by Boone and Crockett and SCI, while Anchorpoint hosts a full-featured hunt club manager along with the database of trophies generated by Trophy Score.  Stop by and say hello inside the tent located at Brittlebank Park along the Ashley River.

The Expo is open to the public 9 am – 6pm Friday & Saturday and 9am – 5pm Sunday.  The event calendar is chockful of great stuff, from a Birds of Prey Flight Demo, presentations by Jack Hanna, Cast Net and Fly Fishing demonstrations……whew, there really is something for everyone.

Tickets are $20 Friday & Saturday and $10 on Sunday with kids under 10 free all weekend.

Lordy, Lordy….

January 20th, 2010

….I just turned 40.  That’s me on the left with the snazzy red Vuarnet shades, sometime around 1986 I think.  The other two studs are my brothers, Hal and Reid.

HBM Reviews Trophy Score

January 18th, 2010

Dayne Shuda's trophy on Anchorpoint

Dayne Shuda of Hunting Business Marketing recently reviewed Trophy Score, an iPhone application for scoring big game developed by Doubletough Ventures, the company behind DoubletoughOutdoors.com.

Trophy Score was extremely simple to use. There are easy help directions for each section of the scoring procedure. It was easy to enter in my measurements. The 1/8 button made it even simpler and faster.

We all know about the Booner bucks, SCI monsters and Pope and Young heroes – you see them in the outdoor magazines every month.  Trophy Score is for the rest of us, who take a trophy animal that may not qualify for the world record books but are the biggest we’ll ever shoot ourselves.  Dayne nails this aspect of the app and the companion website, Anchorpoint.

I went to the living room by my trophy whitetail buck (it’s a trophy in my eyes) and began working with Trophy Score to score my buck.

It’s a trophy in my eyes.

Carrying around a photo of your big game animal on your phone is nice, but when synced to Anchorpoint is where the beauty of the system is revealed; now you can compare your trophy to others, research areas to hunt for trophy potential, and learn what to look for when sizing up a buck in the field.

Trophy Score does more than deer. Score elk, turkey, bear, caribou, kudu and a lot more, plus many subspecies.

Ringing In The New Year

December 30th, 2009

Nothing says “Happy New Year” like the thundering crack of a semi-automatic .308! I picked up this Armalite AR-10 in the spring and this is the first time I was able to try it out. My brother tagged along (that’s him trying to trick me into a ditch).

Firing rifles around the lake isn’t new for us and we were well aware of the possibility of rounds skipping, which you can see in the video.  The opposite bank is quite high, with an even higher field behind it.  It did make quite a racket, which is why we wound up laughing so much, and the lake is situated in a bowl, making it all the more loud.

Happy New Year folks, and best wishes for a prosperous 2010!
