Bearzilla Killed In Florida

Estimated 600# bear struck by vehicle in FloridaA bruiser of a bruin caused a tractor-trailer rig to wreck as it lay in the road, the victim of what has been assumed to be a separate bigrig-bear accident. The incident occured on April 23, east of Tallahassee in Jefferson County. The black bear was estimated to be right around 600 pounds, making it the third largest “recovered” bear in Florida history.

Donald Bailey is a bear-response agent with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and he was unable to get an accurate weigh with the FWC’s scale, “it only goes to 500 pounds and he bottomed out the scale.”

Bailey then hauled the bear to nearby fertilizer plant where he weighed the truck first with it, then without, leaving the difference as the presumed weight of the bear.

The top bear in Florida was a 635-pounder taken way back in 1945 during hunting season.  The second largest comes in at 624 and was killed by a vehicle in 1988.
